SPECIES OF MICROBES EFFECTING DECOMPOSITION
Anaerobic microorganisms
They operate in an oxygen-free environment deep down, performing the decomposition of organic matter.
Facultative microorganisms
They can live in the presence or absence of oxygen. They digest the organic matter and gases decomposed by anaerobes and make the still complex organic compounds easily digestible. They inhabit the middle soil layers and they perform the lion’s share of biological processes.
Aerobic microorganisms
The final stage of decomposition. In the upper layers, the process takes place in an oxygen-rich environment, the aerobes decompose the remaining organic matter and bad-smelling gases (e.g. ammonia), so odor elimination also takes place here.
Bacteria secrete exoenzymes to break down and separate organic molecular chains, and perform intracellular (within cells) decomposition of simpler molecules with endoenzymes.
